Omar’s Place, a Secret Hideaway in Pimlico

May 29, 2018

Omar’s Place really is neatly tucked away in a quiet residential part of Pimlico, a true hidden gem, close to Pimlico tube station and just off of the high street. As we approached the restaurant all we could see and hear was laughter coming from the alfresco diners, groups of friends sat enjoying the early evening sun and delicious colourful cocktails. Being in such a residential and hidden location I was a little envious, the local residents are so lucky to have this gorgeous eatery right on their doorsteps.

As we walked towards the laughter we could sense the warmth and welcoming atmosphere of Omar’s. The restaurant is situated what felt like a in cosy and luxurious cove. The walls were plastered unevenly giving off a warm and rustic feel, and were painted a beautiful dusty pink complimented exquisitely by gold accessories and gorgeous ambient lighting. The thick marble tables were enhanced with plush velvet forest green chairs and sofas that wrapped themselves around you, making you feel as though you were in your own living room.

The restaurant I feel, is very versatile in the sense it can be a casual dinner venue for locals or passer-by’s, seeking a glass of wine and olives, or could be a date night or birthday venue for groups of friends and couples where you can dress up for a special occasion.

As we were seated, we were served by the beautiful friendly staff whom seemed to never be more than a few feet away for anything we may need. The menu boasted an array of cocktails, wines and beers that were created by their expert mixologists and bar staff to compliment the tapas menu.

Now, I love tapas. Tapas could easily be my middle name. Something about having five or six mini sized mains, that you can pick at and share with your loved ones and try new things you normally wouldn’t, without it being a full-sized dish is heaven in my eyes. Not to mention that because they’re smaller, it doesn’t make you feel overly guilty by having more of them, right?!

The tapas menu was one I’d never seen before, and I must have driven the waitress mad my asking so many questions. Rather than pick things we actually had no idea about, we simply said ‘surprise us’ and left it to the chef. 12 dishes later, I repeat, 12 and that’s not including dessert and our three drinks each, we had to be rolled out of the restaurant. We tasted everything, and I mean, everything. We were presented with some amazing dishes – hummus beetroot and aubergine spring rolls and Gambas al Ajillo seasoned with chili and pepper, golden glaze sobrassada – a heavenly chunk of chorizo that we spread across an assortment of flat breads accompanied by tender and delicious grilled octopus. Our final and my favourite dish was a trio of fried yolk parcels with sausage, truffle and honey. Now in all honesty, we probably should have stopped after the tapas, but when the owner Omar comes over with a fresh round of drinks and desserts he personally chose for us himself for us, it would seem rude to refuse!

Omar give us a little history of his past, of owning hotels and restaurants in Turkey and how he dreamed of opening a new venue in the place he now calls home, London.

We indulged in caramelised bread and butter pudding and hazelnut filled brownie with milk ice cream that Omar had said were his absolute favourites. The chef had outdone herself and we were lucky enough to meet and thank the incredibly talented woman herself.

If you’re looking for somewhere new to try, somewhere that offers exquisite Mediterranean food without breaking the bank, Omar’s is the place to go.
