Fitness is The New Black
March 15, 2018
Fitness is the new black. And body confidence rules. Living a fit and healthy lifestyle is now uber-fashionable, especially when you have help from Supplements Direct.
Being fit, what you wear and where you workout says as much about you as the shoes you wear or the handbag you carry.
More women are spending hours in the gym with Body-Sculpting, fat loss and cardio conditioning workouts and are looking good whilst sweating.
The fashionista has been replaced by the FitSpo woman -who is proud to show off her fitness lifestyle with a toned athletic body. Body-sculpting workout sessions are her mission. Her diary dates are filled with less “Five p.m cocktails after work” and more “Cardio & weights session with the PT.”
Fashion runway coat-hanger skinny is so yesterday. Fitness gear looks incredible on buff bodies with toned abs which make the statement “I Workout”.
The social media hashtag “Selfie” trend, has contributed to the growing body confidence debate and getting your abs out is now seen a status symbol.
Think of sculpted body-beautiful Hollywood stars like Cameron Diaz, Madonna and Gwynneth Paltrow.
Strong is the new skinny. We already know that, in recent years thanks to inspirational “fit mom” Jen Nicole Lee, USA based Fitness guru and her JNL brand success. Jen was also a Champion bikini competitor.
Women of all generations continue to gravitate towards embracing this fitness & body confident trend.
UK women are following in fit guru Jen’s footsteps. Now even the hashtag #FitMom has a value equal to your red soled Louboutin’s.
Leading sports wear brand Shock Absorber reveals how the ‘fashionfitsta’ trend is motivating active female Brits:
– Half of 16-24 year olds more likely to exercise in on-trend sportswear
– 30% claim they actually ‘feel fitter’ when wearing fashionable workout kit,
-33% put on make-up or iron clothes before hitting the gym.
With my hot pink workout gear colour obsession, I breathed a sigh of relief, after reading the new research from Shock Absorber, The UK’s No. 1 sports bra brand*. Research has revealed the positive impact catwalk-inspired sportswear is having on active Brits with 50% of women stating they are more likely to exercise while wearing fashionable kit. This new breed of ‘fashionfitstas’ go even further with 30% claiming they actually ‘feel fitter’ when wearing fashionable sportswear.
The research, commissioned to launch the brand’s three new hot pink sports bras: The Active Zipped Plunge, The Ultimate Run and the Active Multi Sports Support, also reveals that kit colour matters.
Although just a fifth of women said they wouldn’t wear pink on a night out, double that amount (38%) has pink clothing in their workout wardrobe.
For workouts, I’m wearing the ShockAbsorber pink Ultimate Run Bra (pictured) during cardio & weights sessions and I love the feel and snug fit of the fabric. Ultimate Run bra RRP £38
With women now wearing their sportswear from day to night it’s not surprising that the research uncovered that over a third (33%) of 16-24 year olds also put make-up on or iron their sportswear before hitting the gym.
Martina Alexander, Marketing Manager at Shock Absorber, commented: “We understand that active women want to look great in their sportswear, which is why we launch our bestselling styles in the latest on-trend colours. This season’s hot pink colourway ensures women feel supported and fashionable during their workout.”
Fashionfitstas are also taking style cues from celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens, Reese Witherspoon, Alessandra Ambrosio and Kim Kardashian who are often seen out in colourful sportswear.
Peter Lemon, Director of the Academy of Fitness Professionals, a leading provider of fitness qualifications told me: “The way you look has a massive role to play in shaping your confidence, and that’s as true for the gym as it is for the office. This is because the way people view you is largely shaped by the shoes you wear, the kit you workout in, or the body that you have. Having confidence is key to all areas of life, and can make all the difference between a workout session where you give 60% and a session where you have the confidence to give everything that you’ve got. Looking good whilst working out is important, but don’t lose sight of the reason why you’re at the gym in the first place, which is to break a sweat. You’re gym-wear has to look good wet and dry, and also not distract you from the task at hand.”
As a fit mom and bikini athlete I have long been an advocate of how looking good helps you feel good about yourself and is a big part of workout motivation.
Fitness expert Lee Pickering, Personal Trainer says: “I see so many of my clients who motivate themselves by splashing out on new trainers or leggings. When you buy something for the purposes of working out in, it motivates you to make use of it – particularly if you’ve spent a fortune! Other clients don’t care what they wear whilst working out in the gym, I’ve seen everything from paint-splashed t-shirts to ripped shorts! But whenever a race, mud run or competition comes around, they always seem to have a favourite workout kit which helps them feel better about themselves. I personally prefer to work out in whatever feels comfortable, but there’s nothing like taking a new pair of kicks out for a run!”
So the message is loud and clear. Re-invent your workout wardrobe then witness your fitness, body confidence levels and self-esteem soar.
Leading the way as a fitness role model is Hollywood actress Kate Hudson, is co-founder and the face of Fabletics new ActiveWear fitness and workout range. There are fashionable colors and a great range of sizes for the perfect fit. The range offers workout outfits for each discipline – Yoga, Run, Gym and Cycle. You can mix and match according to your style and preferences.
The Fabletics website cleverly offers Regular or VIP membership options.
You create your lifestyle profile and each month the team of stylists hand pick outfits for you to buy. You can buy the outfits you love or skip the month with no obligation to buy.
VIP members receive special discounts.
The mission statement on the Fabletics website states: “With Fabletics we want to create a community…a movement to help you live fit”.
Using her intuition as an athlete and fashion lover Kate Hudson shows you her favourite outfits each month. Kate is the daughter of Goldie Hawn and is blessed with good genetics but still likes to workout to keep her bikini body toned and tight.
I was sent two beautiful pieces from the Fabletics collection – new additions to my own workout wardrobe, which I have work during my two hour gym sessions and put to the sweat-test.
The black Salar Capri pants in XS size have a chafe-resistant design and moisture wicking fabric with four way stretch (RRP £35); plus the Zion Tank top in XS size, with built in bra, removable cups, strappy back detail, moisture wicking fabric with four way stretch fabric RRP £52.00.
Looking good whilst training motivates me, as I work up a real sweat in the gym with tough double workouts -HIIT cardio plus weights sessions 5-6 days every week.
Zion Tank top RRP £52 and Salar Capri pants RRP £35.
In the gym I carry a cute mini-bag with iPhone, locker keys and antibacterial foam bottle. A hair brush. Lipstick. And deodorant…(Okay. I know. I only need the first three items.)
But now I have the pink FlipBelt which looks fashionable and is practical.
You see, since the days of baggy sweat pants with bulky pockets are long gone, there is no excuse to not look good. Fashion has many ‘looks’ and styles, but grown adults should leave the ‘grungy’ look for teenagers with attitude to rock it.
Active wear is sleeker and more stylish than ever before. The only problem is there’s nowhere to hold your phone, music, cards, gel packs and keys. That’s where FlipBelt comes in – a singular tubular waistband that solves one of the biggest irritations when working out —where to tuck your must-have items.
Made of a moisture-wicking, spandex-lycra blend, FlipBelt is every bit as flattering and contoured as the rest of today’s athletic wear and carries your on-the-go essentials without tying up your hands. To keep items secure, simply slide them inside the belt and then flip it over, no zips or fuss. Now, everything you need is sitting snug on your hip. No bulk. No bounce. Available in Unisex sizes: XS-XL suitable for multi-sports including running, gym, exercises classes. Colours include Black, Carbon, Neon, Punch, Violet, Royal Blue, Aqua, Hot Pink, Nuclear Yellow and Neon Green. The Flip Belt RRP £25.
So there are no excuses. Working out has never been such fun, whatever exercise or discipline you favour.
One final motivational tip I give people is -don’t forget to take a selfie in your favourite gym outfit. Yes -print and pin it to your fridge to remind yourself how well you are doing exercising and staying healthy. This trick will also stop you giving into any naughty off-diet or late-night cravings temptation. So it’s a win-win situation.
Anyway, now the ‘Fashionista’ has been replaced by the ‘Fashionfitstas’ – who really needs those lusted-after on the lunch break, new Louboutin heels or Marc Jacobs handbag to lift your mood, or make you feel better?
Retail shopping therapy is now less about changing rooms with bad lighting and more to do with a click of the mouse. And of course the ActiveWear Fabletics range is great for online shopping, monthly outfit updates of what’s hot, easy access and website navigation.
It’s all about Gymspiration. Think Fit, think Glam and you too can look like Hollywood-actress-turned-fitness celebrity Kate Hudson.
Think it, feel it, believe it.
Fitness is the new black and yes-it goes with everything.
